  • Study Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

  • Subjects: 57 adults with obesity

  • Intervention: 300mg/day Trpti (providing 250mg OEA)

  • Study Duration: 12 weeks

Comparison of weight, BMI, and body measurements between the OEA group and placebo, split by low (under 35) and high (over 35) BMI.

Comparison of inflammatory response and gut health blood markers between the OEA group and placebo at weeks 6 and 12.

Comparison of gut bacteria population changes between the OEA group and placebo after 12 weeks.

Study Results:

  • Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Akkermansia muciniphila were enriched

  • Increased occludin at Week 12

  • Increased interleukin-2 at Week 6

  • Reduction in interleukin-1β

Glossary

Faecalibacterium prausnitzii
Beneficial gut bacteria known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Associated with better digestive and metabolic health.
Akkermansia muciniphila
Another beneficial gut bacteria that lives in the lining of the intestine. Associated with healthy gut barrier function and is often reduced in people with obesity.
Occludin
A protein that acts like a "seal" between cells in the intestinal wall. Higher occludin = tighter gut lining = less chance of harmful substances leaking into the bloodstream.
Interleukin-2 (IL-2)
A signaling protein (cytokine) released by immune cells. It helps regulate immune responses.
Interleukin-1β (IL-1β)
A pro-inflammatory cytokine - a reduction in IL-1β is considered a positive sign, indicating healthier inflammatory responses in the body.
Cytokine
Small proteins released by immune cells that act as chemical messengers, telling the immune system to ramp up or calm down its response.
